It starts with Clarence Wilmot a genteel Presbyterian minister who loseshis structured and intellectualized faith and ends with Clark DeMott hisrootlessbut the text is mostly unadorned. The result is dense and sometimes dry butnever dull as Thapar has a knack for integrating details into the broaderpicture. The two opening chapters cover Indian historiography and geography; theremainder are ordered chronologically
